National day of the horse

December 13th - It's National Day of the Horse! Designated in 2004, this day is a celebration of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States.

The Spring Mountains is home to a small population of wild horses, who are an integral part of the natural public lands system. Protected under the Wild Horse and Burros Act of 1971, these animals have been declared "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West," as they contribute to the diversity of life forms and enrich the lives of the American people.

When visiting public lands, we encourage folks to be mindful when viewing these beautiful animals, never feeding them and always staying at least a bus length (40 feet) away. Approaching, feeding, and petting these feral animals can make them accustomed to humans, drawing them closer to dangerous highways and busy roads. Animals who are used to being fed can also become extremely aggressive.

On this day, and everyday, we can safely celebrate the impact of these magnificent horses by respecting wildlife!
