Named for their large, mule-like ears, mule deer can be found in the Spring Mountains year-round at various elevations. In the winter they tend to follow the snowline, moving in groups around lower elevation areas where they munch on forbs and twigs where available. They will also store up extra fat and lower their metabolism to adapt to changing conditions and prepare for food shortages. Mammals like mule deer also possess special sebaceous glands that help make their fur water repellent, which is especially helpful during snowy times.
