About this Event

Join us for a fun-filled day as we celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday! This special event held from 10 am to 3 pm is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Smokey Bear and promoting wildland fire education. The celebration will feature various activities, including a birthday cake, educational booths, US Forest Service fire engine, fire crew, and Smokey! It’s a perfect opportunity for families, friends, and community members to learn about fire prevention and safety while enjoying a day out.Picture of Smokey Bear. Smokey Bear, the beloved mascot of the United States Forest Service, has been a symbol of fire prevention since his creation in 1944. Born out of the need to educate the public about the dangers of wildfires, Smokey Bear has become an iconic figure with his famous slogan, “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires.” Over the decades, Smokey has played a crucial role in reducing the number of human-caused wildfires through public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community involvement.

Schedule of Events

  • 10 am- 3 pm: Meet Smokey Bear and the US Forest Service firefighters! 
    • Get a slice of birthday cake
    • Face painting 
    • Visit educational booths hosted by local agencies and organizations
  • 11 am: Guided hike led by the Nevada Department of Wildlife
  • 1 pm: Living with Fire talk led by UNR Extention
  • 2 pm: A History of Wildland Fires in the Spring Mountains led by US Forest Service  

Event Highlights

Birthday Cake: No birthday is complete without a cake! Join us in singing “Happy Birthday” to Smokey Bear and enjoy a slice of delicious cake as we commemorate this milestone anniversary.

Educational Booths: Various agencies and organizations will have booths set up to provide information on wildland fire prevention, safety tips, and the importance of protecting our natural resources. Learn from experts and discover how you can help prevent wildfires in your community.

Smokey Bear Photo Booth: Capture memories with Smokey Bear himself! Bring your camera and take a picture with the fire prevention icon.

Family-Friendly Activities:

Ranger Led Program: Join a ranger for a short hike along the Acastus trail to learn more about wildlife in the Spring Mountains.

Educational Talks: 
Learn more about wildland fires and explore the tools and approaches individuals and communities can utilize to live more safely with wildfire.
Explore the history of wildfires in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

Face Painting Booth: Fun and creative face painting for children to enjoy while learning about fire prevention.
