#PlantoftheWeek: Lewis Flax

Lewis flax is a hardy forb that is fire resistant and tolerant of both drought and frost. Abundant blooms appear in May, with vibrant blue flowers opening at sunrise. The seeds are covered in a jelly-like substance that helps them adhere to the ground and germinate. The strong fibers in the stems of Lewis flax has been used to make cords and strings for snowshoes, baskets, and mats. After being properly prepared, the plant was also used heavily in cooking and medicine. Don't try at home though, as collection of plants today is prohibited by the Forest Service within the Spring Mountains to conserve resources.
