Back by popular demand! Join the Las Vegas Astronomical Society for a night of stargazing in the Spring Mountains. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the night sky through the telescopes of volunteer members of the Las Vegas Astronomical Society.
7:00pm – 8:30pm: Begin the evening in the amphitheater with a welcome and introduction, immediately followed by a presentation with UNLV Astronomy PhD candidate Rachel Langgin. Rachel is a part of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. She will provide an overview of Gravitational Wave science, from the detection of spacetime ripples caused by black hole and neutron star mergers, to the growing field of multi-messenger astrophysics. She will present her current research on early-warning gravitational wave signals — focusing on how we can detect binary neutron star mergers before they collide, opening new windows for rapid follow-up observations using telescopes. If telescopes can be thought of as our eyes out into the Universe, instruments like LIGO can be thought of as our “ears”, listening for gravitational waves (minute ripples in spacetime) from collisons involving the most dense and massive objects in the Universe.
8:30pm – 10:00pm: public telescope viewing with opportunities to see the crescent moon, star clusters, galaxies, nebulae and more.
S’mores and hot beverages provided and select retail items will be available for sale.
$5.00 per person. All proceeds directly go to supporting future educational events.
It may warm down in the Valley, but temperatures in the Spring Mountains can be 20-30 degrees cooler than in Las Vegas. Be sure to bring a jacket and warm layers. There will be a guest speaker for this event so chairs and blankets are welcome if desired. Flashlights with red light options are recommended to keep light pollution to a minimum.
This event is for visitors of all ages. Dogs are welcome but need to be on a leash at all times.
